Hosted by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and the Botanical Society of South Africa (BotSoc), a two day workshop was held at the Stone Cottages at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The aim of the workshop was to explore the challenge of conserving threatened flora while honoring the important role plants play in the lives and traditions of South Africans.

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has given the assurance that concrete measures are being put in place to protect the country's rare indigenous plant species from extinction. This comes after Minister Edna Molewa was asked in the National Assembly what the department was doing to counter the "unprecedented extinction rates" of those species.

The country is also home to about 24 000 plant species and has an entire floral kingdom within its borders. Our natural and cultural resources underpin a large part of the economy and many rural and urban people rely on them for employment, food, shelter, medicine and spiritual well-being.
