The Botanical Society of South Africa (BotSOc) held their Centenary Fundraising Gala Dinner on the 26th of September 2013. It was a memorable evening shared by BotSoc members, council, staff, branches, partners, friends and family.
At the Gala Dinner Special Centenary awards were handed over to Prof Brian Huntley and Dr Ernst van Jaarsveld. Dr Tanya Abrahamse, CEO of SANBI addressed guests and shared about the wonderful journey BotSoc and SANBI have travelled together, as well as the future continuation of their partnership.
Chairman Mike Harper shared stories with guests of BotSoc’s past and present, and plans for the future.
Another highlight of the evening was the Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) launched their book 'Plants in Peril' celebrating their 10 year anniversary, together with BotSoc's centenary. This book features 100 threatened species and tells the CREW story, the importance of their work and the people on the ground making it all possible. Rupert Koopman, Domitilla Raimondo, Nick Helm, Kate Grieve and Ismail Ebrahim were the contributing authors of the book.
Community Chest awarded the BotSoc and acknowledged the great work the Society has done and continues to achieve. Executive Director Zaitoon Rabaney, received the award on behalf of the Society.
The evening celebrations were wonderful shared by all, as great music, great food, great company were in no short supply. A lucky draw and auction offered great items to the lucky winners and highest bidders.
