SANBI Mourns the Passing of Tata Nelson Mandela

nelson mandelaThe South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) joins the nation and the world in mourning the passing of one of Africa's greatest sons, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918-2013).

Staff fondly remember his visit to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in September 1996 when he was presented with the yellow Strelitzia reginae 'Mandela's Gold, which is a rare yellow form of the well-known crane flower named after him.

The SANBI is inspired by his great legacy and will continue its mission to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa's exceptionally rich biodiversity for all South Africans.
