The Rooibos Heritage Route was formally launched in 2006, to promote and support local capacity development and sustainable eco-tourism amongst the communities on the route. This very scenic road between Nieuwoudtville and Wupperthal runs through two Biodiversity hotspots, the Fynbos and renosterveld of the Cape Floristic Region and the Succulent Karoo, offering visitors the best of the greater Cederberg mountain area and a taste of local hospitality.
The small town of Kleinsee in Namaqualand is set to swap its diamonds for another luxury: oysters. A mining rehab centre with a difference is schooling locals in the art of oyster farming and promising to put the small town on South Africa's culinary map.
Livestock, mainly sheep farming, is an important source of livelihood in the Suid Bokkeveld area. Through the quarterly climate change preparedness workshops, organised by Indigo Development and Change and the Environmental Monitoring Group (EMG) in the Suid Bokkeveld, farmers identified the need to better understand how high temperatures affect livestock production and performance.
Working in partnership with Conservation South Africa (CSA) and the Succulent Karoo Ecosystem Programme (SKEP), the Namakwa District Municipality (NDM) has been leading a long-term multi-stakeholder process to integrate climate change response underpinned by an ecosystem-based approach to adaptation into their policy documents, planning and decision making process.
